Detailing a Car Before You Sell or Trade It In: Is It Worth It?
5 min read · Detailing Bureau, Philadelphia
Buyers and appraisers decide how a car has been treated within the first minute. A clean, fresh-smelling car tells them it was cared for — a dirty one invites them to look for problems and offer less.
Private sale vs. trade-in
For a private sale, photos are everything. A detailed car photographs dramatically better, gets more messages and gives you more room to hold your price.
For a trade-in, the appraiser is estimating how much reconditioning the dealer will need to pay for. Stains, odors and hazy paint all push that estimate up and your offer down.

Frequently asked
Should I remove my personal items first?
Yes, please clear out personal belongings, car seats and anything in the trunk so every surface can be cleaned.
Can you fix scratches before the sale?
Light swirls and haze, yes, with paint correction. Deep scratches that catch a fingernail usually need a body shop.
