For drivers who park under trees
Spring Pollen, Tree Sap and Bird Droppings: Protecting Your Car in Philadelphia
5 min read · Detailing Bureau, Philadelphia
Philadelphia's older neighborhoods and suburbs have beautiful mature trees — and they are hard on paint. Here is what each kind of mess does and how to deal with it without scratching your car.
Why these are worse than they look
Bird droppings are acidic and can etch clear coat within days in summer heat. Tree sap hardens and bonds to the surface. Pollen is mildly acidic when wet and gritty when dry — wiping it off with a dry towel is a classic way to add scratches.
Safe removal at home
- Soak droppings with a damp microfiber for a minute before lifting — never scrub
- Rinse pollen off with water first instead of wiping it
- Leave hardened sap to a proper sap remover; scraping it pulls clear coat
What protection really does
A fresh sealant or ceramic coating gives contaminants something to sit on besides your clear coat, so they rinse off far more easily. Our Exterior Detailing includes decontamination and protection; Ceramic Coating is the long-term option for cars parked outside year-round.

Light etching usually polishes out. Deeper marks can often be reduced a lot with paint correction.
How often should I protect my paint?
A sealant every few months, or a ceramic coating that lasts years with simple washes in between.
